What is the point of marriage?

My dad and I were talking about this the other day and were wondering what the point is anymore. My father being a Christian believes that marriage isn't as significant as it once was. Before people would get married to make a lifelong commitment, shares their belongings, have children etc.. Now people don't wait until marriage to be intimate or for children or to move in together. I still believe in marriage and still plan on getting married, I was just wondering everyones opinions on this matter.
