Why do people give dogs away?

Some people have a hole in their hearts/souls that prevent them from truly caring about their pets and they can just casually discard them like yesterdays newspaper. If you do not feel/operate this way, you will never understand, just as a sane person does not understand a pedophile or some other sick person.
