Desktop or Laptop? I don't get the 20 character thing, it's really stupid.?

if i were you, id fix an old one NOW then get a new one for college in 3 years. itd be a waste to get it now then crash in a year. there is WAY more complicated homework in college, so you would need it more then. good luck! (id get a mac, for college. )
